Don't worry Zach. I don't think even someone as good as McDavid can hide my terrible goaltending and lack of defensive depth. I could certainly win a couple of games, but I'm going to struggle winning a series against a good team.
Really missing a lot of playoff information. May be able to piece it together from old gameday threads, but only as far back as whenever we moved to the "temp" site.
Playoff appearances are in the official records thread.
Playoff results going back a handful of years are in the Standings sub-forum.
Also, the history spreadsheet is linked at the very very top of the official records thread.
Thanks. I missed the playoffs in a tiebreak with Biatch in 14-15...I remember that, it stung hard and as I recall I would have faired very well in those playoffs. Division champion the year before that, so it was 13-14 the last time I was in...four years ago as I said.
13-14 - Lost in 7 to the IR
12-13 - Lost in 4 games to the Flyers
Missed the playoffs by a point in 11-12.
So yeah, we'd better do something this year. It makes me crazy that I haven't won a single title in this league.
On one hand, I feel like over 7 game nights, anyone could get hot and be the wrong team to play.
On the other hand, I think division winners getting top 3 auto ranking is stupid, and it makes no sense to have the teams with 99 and 98pts play against each other, with the other matchup 93pts vs 90pts.
It is what it is, but I don't get enough out of the division angle to justify silly playoff matchups.
I'm ok with something like an auto entry into the playoffs for winning your divison, I dont get why a division winner should automatically get the #3 seed. Seems arbitrary, and I hate arbitrary in fantasy leagues. :)

Well, I don't think it was arbitrary. It's exactly the model the NHL had at the time. There was a long time where finishing 6th was the sweet spot in the eastern conference... when the southeast was a ridiculously weak division.
I know you guys have told me you don't care about division titles before, but I'm a fan of making them mean *something*. In the AHL, it's the bye, and that's huge. Too much, maybe, but playing a slightly weaker opponent is a decent-ish prize for a division winner
If NHL goes to 32 teams, and we decide to add a 16th, we can re-align to two divisions of 8, then division winners would only take the top 2 spots, and rank the remaining 6 teams by points only.
I dont know what 'how the NHL used to do it' or 'how the NFL' of all leagues does it matters, but ya, I guess I dont really care how they do it.
They also have 20,000 or 80,000 fans they have to sell tickets to, so I can understand why they want to manufacture rivalries and bad blood between division teams, and create parity where none exists.
I'm not a fan of rules that base their foundation on 'thats how the pros do it".
I realize this comes across as a personal whine since its me in the position, so sorry for that, but it would be my opinion even if I was the #3 seed in this scenario. If you've read my posts here or on FCP, I hate the idea of us putting more luck into a league playoff structure that already has quite a bit inherently in it.

And I will add again, I believe its entirely possible that Davey and I put up scores of 2-1 all series, while Adam+Jeff put up 4's and 5's. Not saying our teams are so much better, 5 standings points means nothing. I just think its silly our setup as I see it.

Wasn't this like a founding principle of this league? Lol.
The playoffs is a pretty short period of time--like, short enough that my early season hot streak exceeded the duration. I highly doubt anyone would have beaten me in a series through that period of time, and yet, I would now be a huge dog vs. several teams based on the averages as they stand today.
Uh, basically, I'm agreeing with the idea that anyone who makes the playoffs can wipe the floor with the rest of the teams.
I've probably suggested it before, and it seems Arp is on the same page
Division winners definitely get an automatic playoff berth, even if they are 9th overall points, but they should be seeded relative to their point total. Not automatically 1,2 and 3. I'm not majorly for this, but I think it makes for more fair first round matchups.
It also adds drama to our league. We should mix both ideas. Jay and Arp’s idea that seeding is based on points not division. But matchups are determined by pick your opponent. It makes the regular season really mean something. That would be such an advantage to the Presidents Trophy winner (and deservedly so, they dominated all year).

This is exactly how I feel. Not a huge deal, but it just makes more sense to me.
Also, I kind of love Biatchs pick your opponent. Wondering if thats more a headache for some reason though, ie, gotta map out all your possible opp schedules....

Lol pffffff mapping is for losers. I would just pick whoever finishes number two to cause chaos

Meh, whatever...pick your opponent sounds fun and I can't think of a reason why #1 would pick anyone other than #8 anyway. Maybe lower-seeded teams would pick higher-seeded teams if there was a key injury or something like that, but they wouldn't get the option anyway.
I don't care if we seed based on points instead of giving top three to division winners. Makes no difference to me at all.
In the Super League (professional rugby league over here), they did actually go with the pick your opponent rule for the playoffs. There was one time in the three years they did it that the team choosing didn't go for the team with the lowest points total and that was because there was a French team in the league who had an awful road record but were great at home. They picked them instead.
I'm really looking forward to making the playoffs again soon. Feels like an eternity ago.
Just checked the history thread Zach mentioned. This will be the 3rd straight miss after 8 consecutive makes. Didnt realise 8th is still tied for the league lead with Jay and Biatch so I'm now actively rooting against Biatch in the race for 8th spot!
Some of these youngsters better step up next season!

Wouldn't some of you hate how myself and others would likely spreadsheet the **** out of picking an opponent in order to get the most +EV situation possible? (That is, if we get in the position to make the choice.)

There would be a lot to consider I think.
I'm just tired of battling against all the people who want to make changes just to make changes. Tired of being the one who says no because I like it the way it is.
