You can probably add Duane to that list too. Out since Oct. 22
I don't understand that...I mean, at least he's setting lineups again but performing the barest functions of the league isn't the same as participating.

Good thing this site is my homepage. Because My participation is simply setting lineups 3 week ahead. I honestly don’t even know my record. I just assume it is embarrassing. Huh, maybe I’m in playoff contention and don’t even know it! 🤦🏻♂️
Come on now Steve. Let's get out of this funk and focus on becoming Fearsome again! We all have to rebuild at some point, it's not as fun but it's exciting when you finally come out of that rebuilding process!
I’ve been “rebuilding” for 6 years and I only get worse. I LITERALLY have no clue what I’m doing. I don’t get it. I have no farm, I have no picks, and no cap. I set myself back 2 years. I’m not trying to sound like a crybaby here. I’m 100% bad at this and I might have hit my limit. I look at my team on google sheets and don’t even know where to begin. Lol.

So is this the wrong time to ask about Larkin's availability?
Steve, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on some of the trades you made? Didn't you have Eichel?
Lol reliving horrible idiotic decisions isn’t going to help. But yes. Quick easy response to that was I don’t think I will compete for 2-300 years so why not use him as a piece to try and rebuild. I believe it was the consensus at the time that it was a horrible idea. 🤷🏼♂️ But goes to price that I gave zero clue wtf I’m doing. I can’t even tell you what I got. Probably a 5th.

Shall we take a deep dive?
First impression is that you have a loooooooot of people signed for many years. They're all quite inexpensive, but it can hamper roster flexibility when you need it and lead to a lot of buyouts and wasted cap space.
It's not that it's necessarily the wrong approach, Adam has a similar looking team as well. Lots of guys signed to $1 - 5 year deals.
Lots of young kids that you were hoping would breakout but really haven't, or had one hot season and regressed a little. Not a huge deal. Need to take those swings. Hit a few and you get rewarded.
You do have some upper end talent there. A few guys over 0.600 pool points per game. It's a little early, so guys off to hot starts typically have inflated stats, but 0.600 players aren't easy to find or keep.
You've definitely got some core assets to hold onto. And you haven't traded away your cap.
If I'm you, I'm probably looking to shed some dead weight. You probably need like 8-10 forwards at 0.450+ with a few high, high enders to compete, plus 6-8 d-men at 0.200+. Forget goalies since they'll be gone. It's hard to fill those roles with solid players when you've got a dozen forwards filling up roster spots at 0.300 or worse.
Maybe a good way to think about is that roster spots are an asset as well. They're limited. You only have 26 slots for F and D. You need to use them wisely to build a winning team.
That's definitely not to say all of your $1 / 5 year deals are or were mistakes. You do need to sign these in this format, often enough, on prospects that are kind of tweeners between being those 0.500+ guys or not, because you only have the one shot to sign them. I think you probably just didn't get lucky enough on enough of them. Probably a few you should have let go... maybe? Hudon I like as his AHL owner, but I'm not seeing a lot of scoring potential there, for example. I probably wouldn't have signed him (if you did indeed sign him). But you hit with Athanasiou, to provide a counter example.
Beaulieu is another guy. Did I sign him? Or did I deal him to you and then you signed him? Either way, that was me avoiding or unloading a deal that hurt my flexibility.
I guess another key takeaway is to not sign replacement level guys long term. You can always get a 0.300 depth forward or a 0.150 depth D in the auction for $1 or less, or, even promote mediocre prospects from your farm if needed (I've done that in the past and just cut them loose after the season because they aren't worth locking up).
I gotta run. I know, I know, don't tap the glass, etc, but this isn't that kind of pool. Steve is active on the boards, always sets his lineups, and nobody wants him to quit, so I want to give a quick, really poorly thought out post about what I might do in his spot. You're right, you have been kind of stuck in neutral, and it doesn't look super great to get out fast, but a few shrewd moves could accelerate it. We can talk more, but I gotta go!
I definitely sign too many hopefuls to deals that are way too long. Guilty as charged. Trying to be better about that by slow cooking my prospects longer (Broadway style) and not flipping them for more expensive guys anymore.

My one big observation is you tend to accumulate picks at the deadline for rentals, but then when the draft comes up you trade the picks for pennies on the dollar because you get bored. To the advice Dan gives, just identify ahead of time that you don't want to do draft research. If you are trading stuff away at the deadline, trade directly for cap space instead of trading the picks you get later for less cap space.

Ha!
Great idea. So great that it’s what I always try to do but never succeed. Go look at most of my trade topics. I never ask for picks. I don’t want picks except for 1sts obv. I always ask for cap. Nobody wants to give cap. They want to give picks. So I end up taking them and getting what I can later. I feel like I spend almost all my negotiating time trying to get cap over picks.
Yeah, cap is really valuable... I’m with you Steve. I never understood how people managed to get to like even $75 pre-auction.
And yet Steve caught a lot of flack for trading Rantanen to me for like $12 in cap. It was a fine deal at the time that turned disastrous only because Rantanen has caught a top 1% outcome in his development.
I traded Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Murphy for like $7 cap each before either played an NHL game. You win some you lose some.
hey, that was me! Ryan f'in Murphy
I find it easy to get cap, im not sure if I understood you guys correct. the best time to get cap is pre season, when suddenly a couple of guys decide its tank season time and they try to get down to 45 asap. personally, id rtaher not get to $85 right away, and dont understand why some do. Get to 70-75, spend at auction, and then hope it gets even cheaper for the balance of the cap during the season, maybe lots of sellers. (like there will be this year)
Also, i agree with Zach. I notice some of you guys are overestimating how "deep" this league is by signing very marginable talent at $1, sometimes guys who were free agents just weeks ago. There is a reason why they were free agents. (not saying Steve does this, or does it exclusively, its just something I noticed from others)

I like to sign the cheaper guys longer term then cut them. the way I look at it is if just 1 of those five becomes a tier two talent, you essentially have him signed at $3 (taking into account the 4x$0.50 buyout cost for the other 4), which is cheaper than your average tier two talent. Of course, if none of them do then it's not ideal but it's a risk you take.
You can probably add Duane to that list too. Out since Oct. 22

Hi,
I'm setting them pretty much every day. Just that:
a. NHL really isn't on my mind these days (f Sens) so while I should be checking the fchl/setting lineups at work it slips my mind, which is dumb because it takes two seconds . So I typically remember while I'm driving home when my head is clear.
b. So don't worry about the IR stiffs in lineups.. it's not like I'm setting these weeks in advance so I'm never going to have 11 actives.
c. Very busy at home... often with lack of sleep my wife and I my work day gets kicked later. If you go back most of those misses were partials, like set lineups just after 7/7:30.

My lineup wasn’t actually as bad as it looked at first glance. I just saw that I had Kunitz and Rutta in the lineup. I’ve been running hot on scrubs putting up points when I have to play them this year.

Good to see you back Duane! Quick update on the league: 1. Dubey has a stacked team. 2. Arp also has a stacked team and he wants it acknowledged. 3. The Sens are somehow the funniest team to watch in the NHL, but maybe not if you are cheering for them.
Now with that out of the way, I have a beautiful Buick at a great price that I think you'll be interested in.

Infinite goals for and infinite goals against.
I was almost back to cheering for them and then the Ukranian Trump went stupid and blew up the Rendezvous project so no awesome development at Lebreton Flats. Even though he admitted when it was announced the extra revenue streams would let him ice a better team.
Chabot's performance really helps, in a holding pattern waiting to see what happens with Duchene / Stone.
