Beat the Ales, gain no ground. Double headers suck.
Bye weeks suck harder. Maybe we should add a 16th team now that goalies aren't a limitation anymore. Which assumes we actually know anyone who would want to join.
I don't remember protecting players. They got their $65 salary money, 5 draft picks, and then 5 extra draft picks after the initial 5 rounds were done.

Yeah, exactly this. There was no expansion draft. The extra 5 draft picks (supplemental draft) actually came at the end of the draft from the summer before the expansion teams' first season. Then expansion teams drafted as normal the following year according to finish. To my recollection the only significant player that came out of the supplemental was James Neal.
I guess we built our teams through trades and through the auction?
Hmm. No wonder it took us so long to be competitive. That said, we didn't have much issue accumulating picks and prospects.
Steve was in the playoffs three of his first five seasons and you (Zach) were in Year Three of the franchise. Jeff is the only one that took a really long time to be competitive, he made it Year Seven for the first time.

It was so much easier to quickly compile assets back then, because we didn't have a cap floor. I think I went down to like $26 or something stupid, and had eaten into the next year as well, before that was fixed. I would be OK with some combination of diluting the draft and allowing the person to pick from existing rosters. If it was like, protect your top 15 and can only lose up to two players, for the majority of teams that's not going to be earth-shattering.
I should have won more than one title with that team.

I remember protecting players b/c I lost Clarke Macathur, Patrick Eaves, and a third guy?

There was 100% no expansion draft. Supplemental (after the regular draft) and auction only.
I didn't notice Abdelkader on the list before, he was servicable for a while but I'm not sure if he was ever called up as his "breakout" season (first season over 30 points) happened seven years after he was FCHL drafted.

I'm very certain that we had an expansion draft at some point -- but given that https://fchl.activeboard.com/t44041202/remember-the-expansion-supplemental-entry-draft-we-had/ was from 2011 it went down ~10 years ago... probably before the move to these forums.

Reading that thread just rehashes the players that went in the supplemental draft.
There was no draft. I remember building from scratch. Gave jay my 1st for Ollie Jokinen who became my first roster player. It was all downhill from there. Never recovered.

That's who it was! I was trying to remember that story. I approached all 3 of you guys with the same PM. Hey if you want a stud to start your team, I can offer Olli Jokinen for your 1st rounder?
Jeff: No thanks Zach: No thanks Steve: Where do I post?
