Maybe the problem with goalies is the uncertainty, because so much changes from year to year, and so much is based on team defense, rather than just goaltending.
Early on in the league I noticed the importance of goalies so I went in heavy on the position -- signed Dallas to a tier 1 contract for ~4+ dollars. Then Turco retired and their stud backup in Mike Smith was run out of town and the team defense went to ****. So bought them out and got 0.50 replacements that were better.
I do like the concept of team goalies/defence but if you compare them to fantasy football some things jump out.
- in FF you get coverage for every week but the bye week.
- the effect of team defense in FF on the final score is much smaller; if we were doing this by computer I'd suggest looking at something other than -0.5 pts for a GA.
Other random brainstorming ideas:
- cap the max penalty for GA at -3 even if the team gets blown out it's not an insta-loss
- goalies can't be signed to contracts (or some sort of different contract mechanism)
- the extra set (ie the Vegas "totally not the London" Knights) can't be streamed
