Nickle City Nerf Herders vs. The Ales Royal Oak Fearsome Beavers vs. KC Reserves Whalers vs. Blindsides Lethbridge Golden Seals vs. Iowa Crop Dusters BlackDevilHawks vs. Broadway asdfjkl; vs. Toronto Rocket Newmarket Hurricanes vs. Lost Cause Injured Reserve vs. Iowa Crop Dusters
Coming out of the auction, I really thought my team was gonna be awful this year. I just went through and set lineups for October, and I'm not feeling so bad anymore.
Nickle City Nerf Herders 3.0 vs. The Ales 1.5 Royal Oak Fearsome Beavers 1.0 vs. KC Reserves 1.5 Whalers 8.0 vs. Blindsides 6.0 Lethbridge Golden Seals 2.5 vs. Iowa Crop Dusters 2.0 BlackDevilHawks 2.5 vs. Broadway (-0.5) asdfjkl; 3.5 vs. Toronto Rocket 1.0 Newmarket Hurricanes -1.0 vs. Lost Cause 3.0 Injured Reserve 4.0 vs. Iowa Crop Dusters 2.0
Notes:
At least the Rocket didn't start Philly
Golden Seals goalies nearly hung the team out to dry, but they hung on for the win
Whalers are averaging almost 7.0 per game through the first three games of the season
Huge score for the Blindsides on a six game night but they ran face first into Hurricane Arpiar
Still undefeated: Golden Seals, Lost Cause, Whalers
Three Stars:
3 - Auston Matthews
2 - Kevin Labanc
1 - Mitch Marner

That's cool, stay on the beaches and out of the favelas. As Dale said...
What's the occasion? I've always been somewhat interested in Brazil, but never so much I actually start looking into going. There are lots of places around the globe like that for me, I really need to get out of the country at some point.
Well, it's kind of a long story about why it's Brazil. Lol. Cliff notes: Guy meets girl, girl returns to Brazil, guy and girl talk every day for a year, guy and girl make plans to hang out in Brazil, guy books non-refundable tickets and hotel rooms, girl bails on guy. Pretty standard stuff, really.

Well, it's a big place. With topless beaches everywhere.
Yeah, I changed my plans a bit since to spend more time in Sao Paulo, a bit less in Rio, and skipping a trip to some small colonial town she wanted to go to. I'll definitely be able to entertain myself in cities this big for two weeks. I'm looking forward to it. I will try my best not to get murdered. (I don't plan on going to any favelas.)

Sounds like an awesome trip, I'm glad you decided to go anyway.
Yeah, well I had been researching Brazil for like a year, lol, so I'm still quite excited. We'll see how I manage with very rudimentary Portuguese. Both Rio and Sao Paulo look really incredible and are like completely different types of cities. I'm excited to have some time to just explore them aimlessly. And eat some good meat.

That's an awful thing to do to someone.
Also glad you are still planning to go. Have fun man.
Yeah, haha. It was like 6 weeks ago or so when that went down, so I'm pretty over it now. Excited to go explore. Plus, I really need a ****ing vacation.
I went to Sao Paolo for work. We weren't allowed to leave the hotel we were at on our own. And when we travelled anywhere, they had an empty bus follow us in case ours broke down. It was ok but I have no desire to return.

That's crazy. Sao Paulo has fewer murders per capita than like a bunch of US cities. My understanding is it's a reasonably safe city. Rio is more dangerous at the moment. Depending on how long ago your trip there was, it could have cleaned up its act since then. I think I recall hearing about some sort of major improvements relatively recently.
I'm interested in it because it's so huge. There's a ton to do there, but certainly not a lot of touristy stuff. It's like the polar opposite of Rio, I think. Which is why I'm excited to visit both.
(And I know murder isn't the only crime to worry about... Sao Paulo accounted for half of all vehicle robberies in Brazil in 2013 ... but I won't be in any vehicles, so shrug.)
The latest data I could quickly find for SP was that some neighbourhoods were as high as 60 murders per 100k (while the overall rate was like 14, and 2 where I'll be staying). Meanwhile, that most dangerous neighbourhood is right on par with St. Louis and Baltimore.
Wow, I didn't realize Sao Paulo was so bad in the 90's. Murder rate topped out at 52.5 per 100,000 back in 1999, compared to 6.1 today.
St. Louis and Baltimore are up around that number today (higher, actually), nowhere else is all that close. I visited the #4 city on the murder capitals list this year (New Orleans) and made it through just fine. Though I did have to call 911 on a crazy meth addict swinging a piece of lumber at cars, so there's that.
Sao Paulo currently compares to San Francisco in terms of murder rate per 100,000. A lot of that is how many people physically live in Brazil though, 13.11 million people in Sao Paulo and around 7.5 million in Rio. 870,000 in San Fran.
So, like I said...stay out of the favelas, don't do drugs and don't get murdered. :)
Not really looking good for Brazil's future, tbh. Thankfully I'm gone before the second round of there election. The crazy right wing fascist nearly got the required 50% in round 1, so it may be a little more unstable than usual... =/
I'm jealous Zach, it's a place that's always been on my TDL. fwiw, I'm all for solo trips. Explore and enjoy at your own pace and desire, and make friends.
Especially the kind that don't kill you, those are the best.

No interest in checking out Brasília to geek out your inner urban planner?
I thought about Brasilia, but it's so bleak. Lol. I'm not sure how much time I could spend there, and I think it's really hard without renting a car, and I'm just not that interested in that.
I wanted to geek out my inner transportation planner in Curitiba, where they pioneered the BRT (along with Ottawa), but that got cut out of the trip when that girl was still involved. She wanted to go to Ouro Preto instead. I'm angry about that. I thought about adding it back in, but by that time I wanted to spend more time in Sao Paulo and it would have been too expensive to add Curitiba (especially because I'm still paying for my stupid hotel in Ouro Preto.
